The course covers a variety of topics form English linguistics in the frame of contemporary theoretical approaches.
Students are required to write and present a seminar paper on a grammar topic of their own choice and compile a compendium of relevant language exercises for class use. The topics to be covered/selected during the course include: noun phrase (structure, article selection, word-formation processes, Saxon-genitive, etc.); verb phrase (structure, aspect, delexicalised verbs, etc.); adjectival, adverbial and prepositional phrase; punctuation; sentence analysis; semantic roles (theta-roles); functional sentence perspective; linguistic variation (AmE and BrE); grammatical collocations; corpus analysis, etc. The seminar work helps students develop and acquire the competences to use methods of scientific research and the ability to analyse and synthesise.
