Current Debates in Social and Cultural Anthropology

The course aims to provide understanding of in-depth knowledge on contemporary theoretical discussions in the field of social and cultural anthropology. The students gain knowledge on the latest developments and debates in the discipline – as well as understanding of how these trends developed – while they also actively participate in focused discussions, during which key literature is addressed. The course addresses two or three selected topics that represent current debates in anthropology. By reading contemporary ethnographic works students are also introduced to the methods and style of ethnographic writing. In addition, the course provides the students with information on the recent methodological and research trends.
The course is based on focused and in-depth readings and analysis of recent articles, edited volumes and monographs with high impact in the discipline. Selected topics are addressed with introductory lecture, focused readings and discussions. Each topic is concluded with a short essay in which the students reflect the discussed topic.

Reading of recently published ethnographies and selected chapters from edited volumes (up to 600 pages altogether).
