Students get an in-depth introduction to Slovenian narrative folklore, from the first records in the Middle Ages, through later historical periods, to modern (urban) legends of the 20th and 21st centuries. They get to know the main folk narrative genres: legends, fables and fairy tales as well as short folklore forms (riddles, proverbs / sayings / idioms, jokes). The most important types of fairy tales; fables; belief, historical, etiological and religious legends in Slovenia are discussed in a comparative European context. Through texts, videos and audio recordings, students become acquainted with the most important storytellers and their narratives in Slovenian speaking area. They get to know the history of narrative folklore research in Slovenia, as well as the most important collectors and researchers of Slovenian narrative folklore, and their research. They get to know the various social uses of folklore and its involvement in the processes of "heritagization"; its role in the formation and preservation of national identity, in political discourse, in tourism, and advertising, up to contemporary organized forms of storytelling.
The purpose of the practical classes is for the students to familiarize themselves with institutions that collect and classify narrative folklore material as well as with their archiving practices through direct contact, as well as with various contemporary storytelling practices and contexts. Based on their own research, students learn basic skills of field research, and archiving folklore as well as the ways of its use and dissemination.
